Response to Santa Cruz Sentinel artilce on Plesant Care.

Santa Cruz Sentinel article gives false hope to residents.
Regarding the sale and possible closure of Pleasant Care.

Although the article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel today, which came only after I called them, has many correct facts but a few are wrong. Unlike the Sentinel reporter, I did talk to corporate. Although they did not answer their main line, the manager at Pleasant Care gave me an extension where I found a helpful soul.
Corporate said with a long sigh.

"The time to qualify for a bid is over, they are slated to close. That center will close."

The truth is they have till the 29th of June for a certain kind of fast track bid, but no one has even tried to pre-qualify.

Its true, they cannot just shut it down, as DHS said. They will do what they did at Capitola, send in high paid nurses and slowly shut them down. This does not help the displacement or the root problem. I think the article is giving false hope to residents who should be prepared and start getting there families and support networks in gear. It took about six months in the last instance.

I writing this in response to the Sentinel article and as an update to the first article I wrote regarding this issues, please read it if you care about this issue.

The article has links that show how they shut down the last similar facility and its affect on the residents.

I will be on Robert Norse’s Bathroom Broadsides radio show where we will tackle this issue. Sunday June 24, 2007. Tune in at 101.1FM, or stream it from http://www.freakradio.org. Studio Line: (831) 427-3772.

Pleasant Care Bankruptcy Documents front page, Hopefully it come out readable. It says that all 29 facilities will be sold in CA, and all bids must be approved, qualified and before you can bid on July 2nd. This must be done by June 29th. No one has even started the qualifying process. There are no Bids.
This place will close. Corporate said as much to me. Its true they will have to follow certain DHS guidelines, but those guidelines will only keep that place open for a short period. Its wrong to give false hope to residents who should be preparing. They played this game with the residents at Capitola Care center. They told them there would be no sudden move, not to worry, someone would buy it. Then, they many found themselves being transfered out of county, with little say in where they went.

The root problem is bigger then the closing of this center, its about the treatment of our poor , disadvantaged and disabled.

I hope this document is readable, sorry if not. I will be reading impotaunt parts that patients and family should know about on air Sunday.
